This book is concerned with two intimately related topics of metaphysics: the identity of entities and the foundations of classification. What it adds to previous discussions of these topics is that it addresses them with respect to human-made entities, that is, artefacts. As the chapters in the book show, questions of identity and classification require other treatments and lead to other answers for artefacts than for natural entities. These answers are of interest to philosophers not only for their clarification of artefacts as a category of things but also for the new light they may shed on these issue with respect to to natural entities. This volume is structured in three parts. The contributions in Part I address basic ontological and metaphysical questions in relation to artefact kinds: How should we conceive of artefact kinds? Are they real kinds? How are identity conditions for artefacts and artefact kinds related? The contributions in Part II address meta-ontological questions: What, exactly, should an ontological account of artefact kinds provide us with? What scope can it aim for? Which ways of approaching the ontology of artefact kinds are there, how promising are they, and how should we assess this? In Part III, the essays offer engineering practice rather than theoretical philosophy as a point of reference. The issues addressed here include: How do engineers classify technical artefacts and on what grounds? What makes specific classes of technical artefacts candidates for ontologically real kinds, and by which criteria?

Detail-Practice: Dry Constrcution liefert einen Überblick über die gängigen Trockenbausysteme, gegliedert nach den Bauteilen Wand, Decke, Boden, und ihren Einsatzmöglichkeiten. Der Band ist konzipiert als Arbeitshandbuch für Entwurf und Planung. Bei der Trockenbauweise im Innenausbau werden keine durchnässenden Baustoffe wie Beton oder Putz zur Errichtung der Bauteile benötigt, sondern "Trockenbausysteme". Diese Bauweise ist nicht nur kosteneffizient, weil sämtliche bauphysikalischen Anforderungen bezüglich Wärme-, Kälte-, Schall-, Brandschutz etc. erfüllt werden können. Unter Einsatz neuer Materialtechnologien ermöglicht diese Bauweise auch eine unerschöpfliche Gestaltungsfreiheit, da die Oberflächen nahezu grenzenlos formbar sind und zudem multifunktional, indem sie Beleuchtung, Heizung, Kühlung übernehmen können. Der allgemeine Teil wird ergänzt durch Ausführungsbeispiele bestehender Projekte mit übersichtlichen Leitdetails sowie durch Sonderkonstruktionen beispielsweise in Feuchträumen. Das Buch zeigt das Potential der Bauweise durch den Einsatz neuer Materialien und Bausysteme auf. Regelzeichnungen veranschaulichen wie in den Vorgängerbänden gängige Konstruktionsdetails. Karsten Tichelmann ist Leiter des Instituts für Trocken- und Leichtbau an der TU Darmstadt. Jochen Pfau ist Prof. für Light-Tech, Trocken- und Leichtbauweisen an der TU Darmstadt. Beide sind Autoren des Trockenbau Atlas vom R. Müller Verlag (nur dt. Sprachausgabe). Detail-Practice: Dry Construction provides an overview of the most widely used dry construction systems, organized according to the building components wall, ceiling, and floor and their applications. The volume is conceived as a practical manual for design and planning. Dry construction in interior design employs "dry construction systems" in place of moisture-retaining materials such as concrete and plaster. Not only is this construction method cost-effective, since the full range of physical requirements, including thermal, cold, and sound insulation, fire safety, etc., can be satisfied. Thanks to the use of new material technologies, it also affords the designer nearly unlimited freedom, since the surfaces involved are almost infinitely malleable as well as multifunctional, capable of assuming the tasks of lighting, heating, and cooling. The general section is supplemented by examples from existing projects with clearly visible reference details as well as from special constructions, for example, in damp locations. The book shows the potential this construction method obtains from the use of new materials and construction systems. As in the preceding volumes of the series, standard drawings are used to illustrate common construction details. Karsten Tichelmann is the director of the Institut für Trocken- und Leichtbau (Institute for Dry and Lightweight Construction) at the Technische Universität Darmstadt (Darmstadt University of Technology). Jochen Pfau is professor of light-tech, dry, and lightweight construction at the Technische Universität Darmstadt. Both are authors of the Trockenbau Atlas (Dry Construction Manual) published by the R. Müller Verlag (available in German only).
